Cruise the Farthest Place on Earth on the World?s Highest-Rated Small Ship Cruise Line

Seattle, August 30, 2012
? ??More than twenty years after the company pioneered an entirely new style of small-ship, ultra-luxury cruising,?Seabourn?plans to extend its repertoire of highly desirable cruising destinations to include Antarctica for the first time in 2013. Seabourn Quest, the newest ship in Seabourn?s award-winning fleet, will begin a series of four 21- to 24-day voyages sailing between Valpara?so, Chile and Buenos Aires, Argentina starting in November of 2013.

?Seabourn is already renowned for our extensive portfolio of worldwide itineraries,? noted Seabourn?s president Richard Meadows. ?Antarctica was the only continent that Seabourn did not feature in our itineraries. This expands our global reach to all seven continents and builds on our already impressive list of exotic destinations. Seabourn is very proud to be bringing our highly rated ultra-luxury cruise experience to Antarctica.?

The all-suite ship will cruise the Chilean coast, including visits to Puerto Montt for the Chilean Lakes District, Castro on the huge island of Chilo?, and Puerto Chacabuco, from where guests can tour the magnificent Torres del Paine National Park. Then the intimate ship will thread the glaciers, peaks and channels of the Chilean Fjords, culminating in a transit of the Beagle Channel and its spectacular Glacier Alley. Weather permitting, following a call at Ushuaia in Argentina?s Tierra del Fuego, Seabourn Quest will cruise by Cape Horn bound for the Southern Ocean. Guests on board will experience five days in Antarctica, including scenic cruising of highlights such as the breathtaking Lemaire Channel, picturesque Paradise Bay and the Gerlache Strait. An experienced Antarctic expedition staff will ensure that guests enjoy the best of the numerous available sites for landings and cruising in smaller inflatable boats, based on real-time weather and wildlife reports during their Antarctic adventures. Scientists, naturalists and other lecturers in a number of disciplines will speak on board and accompany guests ashore to add insights to their once-in-a-lifetime experiences.

During the South Atlantic portion of the voyage, guests will enjoy visits to Port Stanley, in the Falkland Islands, and Montevideo, Uruguay?s capital, en route to or from Buenos Aires.

A 24-day Holiday version will include two days exploring the sub-Antarctic wildlife Eden of South Georgia Island, renowned for its beauty and its vast, teeming rookeries of king penguins and other seabirds, as well as breeding elephant and fur seals.

Seabourn?s new Ultimate Antarctica & Patagonia sailings open for sale on Tuesday September 4, 2012 for sailing beginning in November of 2013.

Want a fat paycheck? Pick the right college

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) ?

While many college graduates are struggling to find jobs, alumni from certain schools are regularly pulling in six-figure salaries.

For the second year in a row, Princeton University's students have been pulling in the biggest paychecks, according to new data from salary research site PayScale.com. This year, Princeton graduates with at least 10 years of experience in their field of work are earning an average salary of $137,000.

Rounding out the top 10, are Harvey Mudd College, California Institute of Technology, the United States Naval Academy at Annapolis, the United States Military Academy at West Point, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Lehigh University, the Polytechnic Institute of New York University, Babson College and Stanford University.

Graduates from these schools earned an average mid-career salary of $122,500 -- up 5 percent from last year. This year's increase follows three years of declines, according to PayScale.

The schools with the highest-paid graduates typically fall into one of two categories: They're either engineering schools, since engineering is the highest-paid major, or they're very prestigious, so companies tend to recruit these grads first -- and pay them handsomely -- when making hiring decisions.

"Not only do (the most prestigious schools like Stanford) offer high-paying majors as well, but there's a level of notoriety that allows people to move into jobs more easily and get higher-paying jobs, and there's also a strong alumni network that helps you get jobs," said Katie Bardaro, lead economist at PayScale.

Graduates earn the highest starting salaries at the United States Military Academy at West Point, where alumni with five years of experience or less make an average of $76,000. The United States Naval Academy at Annapolis and Massachusetts Institute of Technology follow, with average starting salaries of $72,200 and $68,400.

Among the 10 schools with the lowest-paid graduates, the average mid-career salary remained steady this year, at $44,490. The five schools with the lowest-paid graduates were The Art Institute of Pittsburgh (the online division), Benedict College in South Carolina, Mississippi Valley State University, University of the Cumberlands in Kentucky, and Bethel University in Tennessee.

Lower earning potential is common among schools that offer traditionally low-paying majors, like art, said Bardaro. These schools are also often located in areas with lower cost of living, and many don't carry the same level of prestige as the top schools on the list, so it can be hard for students to stick out in a big stack of resumes.

Majors with the biggest pay-offs: The highest-paying majors this year were petroleum engineering, with an average mid-career salary of $163,000, followed by aerospace engineering, which pays an average $118,000. Meanwhile, child and family studies majors can work for more than 10 years in their field and still only earn an average $37,700. Social work is the next lowest-paying major, with a mid-career salary or $45,300.

UCLA researchers say last year's Carmageddon improved air quality
Air quality near the closed 10-mile portion of the 405 Freeway reached levels 83% better than typical weekends, according to a team at UCLA's Institute of the Environment and Sustainability. The reprieve lasted for only one weekend, but UCLA researchers say that last year's Carmageddon closure of the 405 Freeway rid Los Angeles of both traffic and another notorious problem: pollution.

Little ?Mrs. Bieber? Dies From Brain Tumor

Posted: September 28, 2012

Avalanna Routh, dubbed "Mrs. Bieber," dies of brain cancer at age 6

Remember that sweet little girl who got to ?marry? Justin Bieber? Avalanna Routh, who stole the hearts of just about everyone who knew her, died on Wednesday morning at the age of 6. The LA Times reports that upon hearing of her death, Bieber tweeted, ?just got the worst news ever. one of the greatest spirits i have ever known is gone. please pray for her family and for her. RIP Avalanna. i love you.?

Avalanna died of a ?rare and very aggressive cancer,? according to The LA Times. The little girl was known for her vivacious and upbeat personality, even in the midst of her terminal illness. Avalanna earned the nickname ?Mrs. Bieber? when staff at the Dana-Farber/Children?s Hospital Cancer Center staged a pretend wedding for Avalanna to Justin Bieber. The party included flowers, a wedding cake and singer, and a red shirt for Avalanna that read ?Future Mrs. Bieber.? The celebrity spent an evening with Avalanna for Valentine?s Day, where they played board games and signed autographs for each other. Today.com reports that Bieber tweeted after their date: ?That was one of the best things I have ever done. She was AWESOME. Feeling really inspired right now.?

Avalanna inspired more than just Justin Bieber. ?She was one of the most vivacious, outgoing, engaging, precocious kids I?ve ever known,? said Dr. Charles Roberts, a pediatric oncologist who worked at Dana-Farber/Children?s Hospital Cancer Center, in an interview with the Los Angeles Times.

The following Tweet report, later confirmed by several media outlets, announced her death on Wednesday: ?Our darling Avalanna went to Heaven this morning. Oh Avalanna, the brightest star?? you took our hearts with you, our greatest Love.?

MyVR Raises $1.4M From SV Angel, Chris Dixon To Attack The $85B Vacation Rental Industry

Screen shot 2012-09-28 at 2.05.02 AMThanks to the HomeAways and Airbnbs of the world, more and more people are looking to rent their apartments and homes. There are currently some six million active vacation rentals in the U.S. and Europe, and this number is growing. However, the problem is that the vast majority of vacation rental owners aren't taking advantage of the available technology to market, manage or share their properties. MyVR, a San Francisco-based startup that graduated from Y Combinator in March, sees a big opportunity to help owners and operators alleviate the offline pain of managing their vacation rentals and help bring them new (or at least more regular) business.

Windows on Evolution - can you outdo "March of Progress" imagery?

Windows on Evolution - can you create the iconic image of this extraordinary idea?

?

Charles Darwin?s grand discovery of evolution by natural selection (oh and hey ? what?s up, Wallace!) has been with us for over 150 years and transformed medicine, society and any number of scientific disciplines. Paleoart and nature illustration are thriving, lively fields.

So why are we still stick with the Ascent of Man, March of Progress imagery as the iconic image of evolution? (I hesitate to call it Ascent of ?Humans? ? the gender bias of the image is as outdated and iconic as the linear path it suggests.)

The original "March of Progress" (1965) by Rudolph Zallinger for Time-Life books. This image should totally be a jumble of primates jockeying for position and way more crowded. Someone fix this.

It?s speaks volumes that even an inaccurate and tongue-in-cheek version of this image can cause such dissonance in?creationists when the successive primates would like to be a Pepper too.

Really creationists? *Really??*

Science-Art Nature, a group with one of the shortest and most elegant mission statements I?ve ever read, wants to see if today?s generation in the burgeoning field of science-art can do better than a line-up of sexist apes or evolution-via-soda.

From the Windows on Evolution site:

?Science Art-Nature invites you to participate in a juried virtual exhibit,?WINDOWS ON EVOLUTION:? An Artistic Celebration of Charles Darwin, commemorating Darwin Day, February 12, 2013.

  • The top 40 entries will be posted on Darwin Day, but all qualifying works will eventually be added.
  • The exhibit will remain accessible through the Science Art-Nature website indefinitely.

?We intend to have the exhibit announced through various websites including that of the Darwin Day Organization.? Darwin Day, as described there, is ?an international celebration of science and humanity.?? Visit their?site to see videos, lectures on evolution, and information on Darwin, evolution, Darwin Day events and more.

?As always, our aim is to display and promote the best contemporary Science Art and to encourage discourse between the scientific and artistic communities.?

(More information and the forms here.)

Deadline for entries is October 15th, and there?s a small fee to enter. They?re also taking donations to help make this exhibit free to view and giving away swag to donors over certain thresholds ? the standard crowdsourcing-for-awesomeness model.

Have you got what it takes to describe evolution and fire the imagination of the masses? A painting almost done, an image in your sketchbook, an idea noodling around in your head that you?ve never gotten to? Now?s the time to create and add to the grandeur of modern science art and communication.

Make sure to hover over this image at the Windows on Evolution page to reveal all the species! ? Carel Brest Van Kempen.
