U.S. shares fall, euro pressured on Spain rescue

NEW YORK (Reuters) - U.S. stocks fell on Tuesday as investors sought a catalyst to justify further gains and the euro was under pressure on concerns about a bailout for debt-laden Spain.

The euro was about two cents from the 4-1/2-month peak posted against the U.S. dollar. Renewed worries about global growth also weighed on markets.

Earlier Wall Street had been buoyed by end-of-quarter buying by funds and a higher-than-expected reading of confidence among American consumers.

But as the day wore on in New York and major U.S asset manager BlackRock said the strong equity rally this year has run its course, the gains were erased and stocks declined.

The Dow Jones industrial average was down 52.02 points, or 0.38 percent, at 13,506.90. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index was down 8.53 points, or 0.59 percent, at 1,448.36. The Nasdaq Composite Index was down 26.55 points, or 0.84 percent, at 3,134.23.

The MSCI world equity index was little changed at 336.288. European shares gained 0.4 percent.

"Any downdraft is going to be abbreviated with the recognition of the fact the Fed has effectively put a floor in the market, and it's not just the Fed, it's the ECB as well," said Peter Kenny, managing director at Knight Capital in Jersey City, New Jersey.

"What we are kind of dealing with here is a rudderless ship - there is no economic data to support any sort of robust buy activity."

U.S. stocks rose at the open after comments late on Monday from the president of the San Francisco Fed suggested the central bank was not done taking action to stimulate the economy. That overshadowed a pessimistic outlook from Caterpillar .<.n/>

U.S. stocks were also supported early by a private sector report showing U.S. consumer confidence jumped to its highest level in seven months in September.

"There are some incrementally positive consumer numbers and housing data," said Dan Veru, chief investment officer at Palisade Capital Management LLC in Fort Lee, New Jersey, which oversees $3.6 billion. "It's in the face of a weaker forecast from Caterpillar, but it's difficult to get too upset about stuff they are talking about for 2015."

Caterpillar shares fell 3 percent. On Monday, Caterpillar Inc cut its 2015 profit outlook, warning that weaker commodity prices would result in a bigger-than-expected decline in demand.

NO HUGE BETS

U.S. data showed single-family home prices rose for a sixth month in a row in July, though the improvement was not as strong as expected.

The euro was also little changed at $1.2925.

The overall support for the single currency rally in recent weeks was the European Central Bank's offer to provide bailout funds to indebted governments - if they seek its help and are willing to accept tough conditions.

But investors were not making huge bets.

"Fears about Europe's situation remain among investors, with the focus mostly on Spain, but Greece is also still a concern," said Kimihiko Tomita, head of foreign exchange for State Street Global Markets in Tokyo.

At the center of market concerns is what happens next in Spain. The government is due this week to present its draft budget for 2013, outline new structural reforms for the economy and release the results of stress tests on the banking sector.

U.S. Treasury debt prices were mixed.

The benchmark 10-year U.S. Treasury note was up 7/32, with the yield at 1.6887 percent. The 2-year U.S. Treasury note was down 1/32, with the yield at 0.2703 percent.

GROWTH CONCERNS

After the recent central bank actions, many investors have become convinced that markets can rally further. But they believe any gains are highly dependent on signs the slowdown in the global economy has bottomed.

"The majority of central banks are in total, outspoken reflationary mode. That's a big story," said Didier Duret, chief investment officer at ABN Amro Private Banking in London.

Which Birth Control Methods Are Best For Teens? | Health X Pert ...

? WebMD Medical News By Daniel J. DeNoon Reviewed by Louise Chang, MD Sept. 21, 2012 ? Sexually active teen girls? best bet for birth control is either an IUD or a birth-control implant, say new guidelines from a leading doctors? group. More than 40% of teens are sexually active. Nearly all of them use some kind of birth control. But fewer than 1 in 20 uses the most effective contraceptives . The result: 82% of teen pregnancies are unplanned. ?Intrauterine devices and the [birth-control] implant are the best reversible methods for preventing unintended pregnancy , rapid repeat pregnancy, and abortion in young women,? state the new guidelines from the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG). Condoms and birth-control pills work very well if used exactly right. The way most people use them, however, they often fail. Condoms put on wrong or lubricated too little can break. And missing even one dose of a birth-control pill, or even taking one at the wrong time of day, raises the chance of failure. These common forms of birth control are even more likely to fail in the hands of teens. On the other hand, IUDs and birth-control implants work extremely well ? and work just as well in teens as in adult women. IUD vs. Birth-Control Implant An IUD is a device shaped like the letter ?T.? Once inserted into the uterus ? a procedure that can be uncomfortable ? it prevents pregnancy for up to 12 years. It can be removed whenever a woman wants. Getting an IUD can cost between $500 and $1,000. It must be placed by a health care professional. Birth-control implants are rods the size of a matchstick inserted into the arm. They last up to three years, and can be removed whenever a woman wants. Getting a birth-control implant costs $400 to $800. It must be placed by a health care professional. Health Care Pros Advised to Help Teens Get IUDs, Implants The guidelines state that it?s up to the teen to decide whether she wants to get an IUD or a birth-control implant or not. ?Health care providers should consider long-acting reversible contraception methods for adolescents and help make these methods accessible to them,? the guidelines say. The guidelines also state that health professionals should protect teens? confidentiality, which ?is of particular importance to adolescents.? As of September 2012, in 21 states and the District of Columbia, nobody other than the teen needs to be involved in the decision. In 25 states, laws restrict the ability of teens to decide all by themselves: Twenty-one states allow teens to consent to birth control services if they are married. Three states allow minors to consent to birth control services if a doctor determines they would face a health hazard without them. Six states allow minors to consent to birth control services if they already are parents. Six states allow minors to consent to birth control services if they are or have ever been pregnant. Eleven states allow minors to consent to birth control services if they meet requirements such as having a high school diploma, demonstrating maturity, or receiving a referral from a doctor or member of the clergy. The ACOG guidelines note that cost will be a barrier to teens who, to protect their confidentiality, do not want to seek benefits under their parents? health insurance. Other teens? family health insurance may not cover birth control, or they may be uninsured. ?In all of these cases, referral to a publicly funded clinic may be appropriate,? the guidelines suggest. ?Proposed health care reform methods, including [IUDs and birth-control implants], without co-payments or deductibles for these preventive health services, may ease this burden.? The new ACOG guidelines appear in the October issue of Obstetrics & Gynecology . Telescope mirrors arrive at Nasa

The first two components of the huge mirror set to fly on the US James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) have been delivered to Nasa.

James Webb - regarded as the successor to Hubble - is due to launch in 2018.

After they have been checked, the hexagonal mirror components will be stored until engineers are ready to assemble them onto the telescope.

Some 18 of them will make up JWST's 6.5m primary mirror, which is more than twice as wide as Hubble's main mirror.

On 17 September, the mirrors left the facility of contractor Ball Aerospace in Boulder, Colorado, for Nasa's Goddard Space Flight Center in Maryland, where the telescope is being assembled.

"These first two completed flight mirror assemblies arriving at Goddard are an important first step leading towards the integration of the mirrors onto the flight structure," said Lee Feinberg, the optical telescope element manager for JWST.

The remaining 16 mirror "assemblies" will make their way from Boulder to Nasa Goddard over the next 12 months as they await integration into the infrared telescope in 2015.

Each mirror component measures more than 1.3m across and weighs some 40kg.

JWST is the first civilian space observatory to use an actively controlled, segmented mirror.

  • James Webb's instruments will be tuned to light beyond the detection of our eyes - at near- and mid-infrared wavelengths
  • It is in the infrared that very distant objects will show up, and also those objects that in the visible range are obscured by dust
  • Hubble is a visible light telescope with some near-infrared capability, but its sensitivity will be dwarfed by JWST's technologies
  • Europe's far-infrared Herschel space telescope has a bigger mirror than Hubble, but JWST's mirror will be larger still

It will also carry a shield the size of a tennis court to guard its sensitive vision from the heat and intense glare of the Sun.

James Webb is expected to be the premier space observatory of the next decade and will study every phase in the history of our Universe, ranging from the first luminous glows after the Big Bang, to the formation of star systems capable of supporting life on planets like Earth.

In order to, for example, look back through time to observe young galaxies, JWST needs a large mirror to see such faint objects.

A telescope's sensitivity, or how much detail it can see, is directly related to the size of the mirror area that collects light from the objects being observed - with larger mirrors collecting more light than smaller ones.

Recommended 16 years ago as the logical evolution beyond Hubble, the JWST has managed to garner a fair amount of controversy.

  • James Webb's main mirror has around seven times more collecting area than Hubble's 2.4m primary mirror
  • The sunshield is about 22m by 12m. There will be a 300-degree difference in temperature between the two sides
  • James Webb's instruments must be very cold to ensure their own infrared glow does not swamp the observations
  • The mission will launch in 2018 on an Ariane rocket. The observing position will be 1.5 million km from Earth

Technical difficulties and project mismanagement mean the observatory is now running years behind schedule and is billions of dollars over-budget.

Elements of the US Congress wanted to cancel the telescope in summer 2011. That did not happen, but Capitol Hill now has James Webb on a very short leash, with Nasa required to provide monthly updates on milestones met or missed.

The current estimate for the US side of the mission is $8.8bn, which covers the full life cycle of the project from its inception to the end of initial operations.

Extra to that bill is some $650m for the European contributions like the Mid-Infrared Instrument (Miri) - which will help confirm the identity of the first luminous objects in the cosmos - and the Ariane rocket that will launch the observatory in October 2018.

Six take-a-ways from Marketing in the Round | Sword and the Script

Integrated marketing has been the Holy Grail for marketing since I started working in the industry.? It was popular a decade ago, and even a decade before that.? For some reason, the concept ebbs and flows like the fashion of bell bottom jeans.

Why hasn?t the concept stuck?? It?s logical, practical, and more importantly effective.? The term ?integrated marketing? may not be sexy but for me, it brings a sense of nostalgia, yet the overlap in marketing functions we?ve seen as companies increasingly adopt social media, causes me to believe that maybe this time?this time it?s real.

Marketing in the Round is about integrated marketing in a digital media age and it?s a straight forward, no-nonsense read, perhaps the result of two pragmatic marketers teaming to write the book. If you are new to marketing or PR, you should put this on your reading list; if you are a veteran, its chance to step back and re-think marketing strategy. ?Gini Dietrich and Geoff Livingston launch the book earlier this year, and though it took me a while to sit down and focus on reading, I finally got it done on a plane ride to vacation ? and wrote this on the plane ride back.

Here are my six take-a-ways:

1. Allocate budgets by campaign and not by?discipline.

Budget is one way to funnel key players towards integrated marketing.? Often times in business, the leads from across the different marketing functions put forth a budget request and compete against each other for a slice of the same money pie.? This is inherently divisive. ?In contrast, by focusing a budget on campaigns, it forces all functions to key their eye on the same goal and integration comes more naturally:? marketing messages are uniform, emails are timed with press releases, content marketing works to dominate key words that paid search is targeting.? It?s more effective.

2.? Use big breaks as stepping stones for more big breaks.

Athletic wear maker, UnderArmour , is a proof point for the ?top-down influence? approach to marketing, one of four possible marketing strategies among direct, groundswell and flanking approaches.? The company started out by working on the groundswell approach, that is to say, primarily word of mouth marketing.? UnderArmour had a new approach to athletic clothing, quick drying, moisture wicking, and an incredibly warm and comfortable material ? ample fodder for a groundswell.? It grew slowly and steadily, until Oakland Raiders quarterback Jeff George appeared on the cover of USA Today in the company?s threads. That placement paved the way for two separate university athletic deals and momentum shifted in the company?s favor.? The company earned a placement in a highly successful football movie, Any Given Sunday, which fueled enough sales for advertising in ESPN Magazine, which in turn triggered three-quarters of a million in sales.? The company which started in 1996 with $17,000 now earns nearly $1 billion in annual sales.

3.? Specialists need a facilitation to think and act broadly.

?Most media relations aces do not comprehend marketing.? Direct marketers do not understand crowdsourcing.? Advertisers rarely understand the long-term relationship work that business developers and fundraising pros participate in,? says the book on page 68.? I couldn?t agree more ? and the larger a company grows, the worse the problem becomes as more and more specialists are added to the mix to fill marketing needs. ?This is an important reminder that as marketers, we should continuously seek to broaden our skills. Marketers should learn about the long hard process of earning media; PR pros should spend time with the SEO specialists; direct marketers should tie their campaigns and news letters to existing content.?? Sit in on another marketing functions meeting; read a book outside your specialty; subscribe to a blog from a sales guru; learn how to read an income statement, a balance sheet and their relationship with cash flows. ?If our organizational leadership does not have the broad skills to facilitate integrated marketing, we can take the task upon ourselves merely by exploring other areas.

4. ?People buy from people they like and trust.?

?Owned content allows you to develop that one-to-one, human interaction in a more effective way.?? This is why content marketing is so important ? to every function ? to SEO, to PR, to direct marketing. Content is a form of currency on the social web and is used in barter for time from stakeholders:? influencers with an interested in the topic, customers seeking to learn more about a product they use, prospective customers anywhere along the sales cycle, whether it?s the first touch, or checking back before making a purchase.

5.? Email marketing is still effective ?and incredibly important to integrated marketing.

Remember email?? We still use it ? every day ? and most social networks require an email address to establish a social profile.? Email is for loyalty, it?s for the customers that already know us and have opted-in for great content.? It?s a relationship builder, it?s a traffic driver and it can have a forty-fold return on investment.? For every dollar spent on email marketing, marketing gets about $40 dollars in return.? Over my career, I?ve seen many companies think of an email newsletter as an afterthought.? It takes time and effort, often with little short-term return, to build a community (similar story with social media).? However, for those that do, five or ten years down the road that nominal interest builds in a compounding fashion, with a highly engaged and interested audience.? Relationship building is like banking ? we?ve got to make a few deposits before earning trust.

6. ?In marketing, no approach is certain.?

?What is certain is that we are all working with a dramatically changing media landscape that has moved faster with each new decade.?? This goes back to marketers striving to be well-rounded ? to broaden their skillsets in preparation for the next change, or as I?d prefer to think about it, the next new opportunity.

* * *

If it?s true, ?advice is a form of nostalgia, dispensing it is a way off fishing the past from the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the ugly parts and recycling it for more than it?s worth,? then the nostalgia for the resurgence of integrated marketing is an effort to move forward and never look back.

Need Home Improvement Advice? Follow These Directions ...

The outside of your home also makes an excellent spot for a home improvement project. Staining your driveway adds a beautiful touch to the front of your residence. Also, look to see if you need to fill any cracks or re-tar the driveway. Sometimes, the front of your home can be forgotten as you make improvements, but these projects can really add a lot to the aesthetic value of your property.

Ceiling fan installation is a fantastic and cost effective home improvement project that you should consider. Ceiling fans are great for circulating the air in the home, and keeping the home cool. They can also help reduce the cost of your electric bills by eliminating the need for air conditioning during the cooler days of the summer.

Removing dated wallpaper is a home improvement that can completely transform the interior of your house. If you have money to spend, the best way to remove wallpaper would be to buy a commercial stream wallpaper stripper. If, however, you are on a limited budget, fill a spray bottle with a mixture of hot water and fabric softener and completely saturate the wallpaper. Leave the wallpaper for a few minutes then carefully peel off with a putty knife.

Change up your home with each season. You can give your rooms a lift according to the season, simply by changing a few things. Get new pillows for the couch, and swap out autumn/winter candles for vases of fresh flowers. Change the duvet in your bedroom by replacing a heavy winter one for a light weight one in a bright, summery color.

If you are unable to pick a paint color because you are not sure how the colors will look in your desired room, purchase a small amount of paint in different colors to test out on the wall. Having a larger color swatch to look at and evaluate in your room?s lighting can help you to make a decision.

If you live in an apartment, then you may believe that there is nothing you can do to improve the value of where you live. If you are the owner of the apartment, this is not true. There are many floorplans that you can use to easily add value to your apartment.

Get really good references for contractors you use on your home improvements. It is far too easy for a con artist to take your money and run, leaving you with a wreck of a home and no more money to fix it. Don?t trust just anyone. Make sure you have plenty of excellent references, from people you really trust.

If space is at a premium in your home, consider remodeling the attic or basement. These areas offer a cost-effective way to gain extra square footage without resorting to constructing an addition. If the area already has a floor, roof, and walls your project will move along quickly and you?ll be enjoying your new space in no time.

For those who like to do it themselves instead of hiring someone, there are many ways to learn different techniques for home improvement. Looking on the internet, reading books or talking to more knowledgeable individuals, can help you to glean some useful information. There is much that can be learned for someone who wants to fix up a house.

Use carpet samples to carpet a whole room! Retail stores often throw away their samples. Cut each sample up into smaller pieces and tack or glue them into place for free floor covering. Cut them in identically sized pieces for a tile effect or cut them in irregular geometric shapes for an abstract look.

There are times when a home owner will take on a project which is beyond their ability. In this case do-it-yourself home improvement can end up costing more than a contractor would have charged in the first place. As this article helped you see it is always wise to do some research and get professional advice before taking on a home improvement project.

Electricity savings grow business marketing power

September electricity and natural gas pricing has continued to beat the utility SOS (Standard offer Service) pricing in most markets. Giving companies that pay directly for their utilities an opportunity to lower their energy costs and deploy those savings to other areas in their business. Recently a restaurant client reduced their cost of electricity by a penny per kilo Watt hour using Electric Advisors as the conduit, saving over $8,000.00 over the next 12 months. According to the owner, close to 50% of the money not being spent on energy is going to be used to beef up their social media outreach as part of a larger?campaign?to fill more seats more often. What would you business do with another $4,000.00 in marketing spend?
